Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Our Endoscopic Anesthesia team provides anesthesia services for approximately 18,000 patients annually. We use a multidisciplinary team approach to create individualized anesthesia plans tailored to each patient’s medical conditions and unique needs and work together with the proceduralists to ensure optimal outcomes. This teamwork extends to partnering with the leadership of the Endoscopy Unit to enhance safety, optimize performance, and improve efficiency, creating a seamless experience for every patient. One of our top priorities is ensuring timely and thorough preoperative evaluations for patients with complex medical conditions who require endoscopy as part of their treatment and hospital discharge plans.

Research

Our Digital Health Laboratory conducts extensive research on respiratory failure, with evidence-based practice critical to improving patient outcomes. As a result, our physician-scientists developed an automated prediction tool using machine learning to determine which patients undergoing a broad spectrum of procedures ranging from endoscopy under deep sedation to heart transplantation under general anesthesia are at the highest risk of postoperative respiratory failure, integrating both clinical and scientific insights.

Researchers in our Digital Health Lab have also conducted observational studies showing that having an anesthesia provider administer sedation for patients undergoing procedures in non-operating room settings improves patient outcomes. We completed the first retrospective cohort study analyzing the impact of anesthesiologist-led sedation on patients undergoing interventional radiology and endoscopic procedures. The study, which included data from more than 22,800 patients at Montefiore Einstein, found that those who received sedation performed by an anesthesiologist had a 44% lower risk of non-home discharge.

As part of an international group of expert anesthesiologists and gastroenterologists, we also recently helped establish consensus guidelines for the perioperative management of patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
